REVIEW: 3 Floyds Lord Rear Admiral

TL;DR summary : Solid textbook ESB

Beer style: ESB
ABV: 6.4%
What I paid: 12.99
How it came (packaging): 22 oz bottle.

About the Beer: I feel like you don’t see a lot ESBs on the market. It’s not a hugely popular style in the US, and I’m not sure why. This is 3Floyd’s offering. Their overly flashy site says it has complex malt sweetness and apricot hoppiness.

Color/appearance: dark amber brown. Thick persistent light caramel head
Aroma: lightly malty, subtle fruit hints
Mouth feel: light to medium body
Flavor: bread, malt hints, a little smoke. Dry slightly bitter finish

Notes: pretty classic ESB. Solid not over hopped the finish is smoky and bitter
Not my favorite from 3F but still an excellent beer. Malty but not heavy.

Summary: There’s not really much to expand on here. This is a good solid ESB. You can’t go wrong with it. I didn’t get the apricot notes but it may have just been me. There are layers to the malt, and they hit you in waves as you get deeper into the beer. At 6.4% you can probably draw out one 22 oz bottle over a long dinner or a couple hours of conversation, but this really isn’t a session beer.

Rating : 4

1 – avoid
2 – if it’s the only choice, I guess
3 – a decent beer. Drinkable.
4 – good beer – hard to turn down
5 – great beer - One of my favorites, pour me another.
