REVIEW: Maine Beer Company Beer II

TL;DR summary : Just buy Lunch instead.

Beer style: Session IPA
ABV 4.7
What I paid: It was a gift
How it came (packaging): 1pint 9 oz bottle
Brewery link: http://www.mainebeercompany.com/beers/hop-program/

About the Beer: Beer II is part of MBC’s experimental Hop Program. As the name implies, this line allows them to try different combinations of hops in different beer styles in limited runs. This one is a session IPA. The page lists the specific hops used.

Color/appearance: golden straw, thick white foamy head
Aroma: oranges, grapefruit. sweet
Mouth feel: light bodied, slick
Flavor: bitter, citrus, grapefruit. sweet. Grain undertones, finishes with a hint of sour.

Notes: not blown away. It’s light and crisp, but it doesn’t really have a lot of flavor. It’s there, but you have to really concentrate to find it. Unfiltered. 4.7% Pushes the upper edge of “session”. Especially in big bottles. Not my favorite from these guys. I wouldn’t turn it down if it was offered but I wouldn’t buy it.

Summary: The notes pretty much say it all. I’m not going to bash this beer too hard because it’s part of an experimental line. I certainly wouldn’t bring this one into full time production. If you’re making a trip to MBC you’re likely going to pick up Lunch. Stick with that. It’s a far superior beer.

Rating : 2
