Beer style: Double IPA
ABV 9.4%
What I paid: 10.99
How it came (packaging): 22 oz. bottle

About the Beer: Stone Brewing Company, headquartered in
Escondido California, is known for big, hoppy beers and a willingness to
innovate and explore (they have their own farm). Enjoy by 4.20.15 fits their MO
perfectly. It’s a double IPA, brewed, according to them, not to stay fresh very
long.
Color/appearance: hazy, orange/amber foamy white head
Aroma: hops. piney, hint of banana/bread, floral
Mouth feel: light bodied
Flavor: hops. With a hop after-taste. Starts out floral and
slightly sweet/citrusy plunges into hoppy bitterness, finishes on an almost
painfully bitter note, but doesn’t quite get there.
Notes: It says devastatingly dank on bottle. This is not a
lie.
Summary: This
is not my favorite beer style, but I was expecting a something so bitter as to
be undrinkable. That’s not really the case. Yes, it’s hop heavy and the IBUs
are through the roof, but there’s enough flavor there to keep it interesting. It
would probably do well pared with extremely spicy food. Stone plays up the
fresh beer angle, something I don’t entirely buy into, but I give Stone credit
for being Stone.
Rating : 3
1 – avoid
2 – if it’s the only choice, I guess
3 – a decent beer. Drinkable.
4 – good beer – hard to turn down
5 – great beer - One of my favorites, pour me another.
I’ve thought a bit about it, and rating a beer solely on my
opinion of it is somewhat biased, especially in cases like this where I’m not a
fan of the style in general. That said, I have decided to add a rating based on
a comparison to other beers of the same style, three being average, five being
best. You get the idea.
