About the Beer:
Gray Sail is fairly new on the brewing scene, having brewed
their first commercial batch in November of 2011. They are located in Westerly RI, and currently have a
distribution area limited to southern New England. For having been open only a
short time, and still being a fairly small operation, Gray sail has had a
pretty impressive run of limited releases. However, the beer I’m talking about
today is one their year-round releases, the aptly named Flagship.
Flagship is a cream ale. The brewery’s website says it was
inspired by European lagers and has a balanced character.
Color/appearance: golden effervescent with a thick white
head.
Aroma: bread, hint of citrus
Mouth feel: slick
Flavor: lightly toasted malt clean finish
Notes: light bodied, smooth. Not heavy. Finishes very clean.
Balanced. Hops dry out the malt without making it overly bitter.
Summary: After working in the yard all day, I sampled a
different beer for review. I wish I had tried this one first. I came into this beer
cold, with no preconceived notions, and I was blown away. I ended up finishing
off the entire six pack over an evening. I feel like I could drink this beer
all day, it’s a great lawnmower beer. It not complicated, not heavy, and not
overly strong, making it a perfect session beer. The price helps too, sitting a
couple bucks lower than a lot of other craft beers out there. If you’re in
Southern New England, pick some up. You won’t regret it.
