REVIEW: Lagunitas Brewing Company Censored

TL;DR summary : There are better beers from Lagunitas. Pick something else.

Beer style: Copper Ale
ABV 6.7
What I paid: $9.99
How it came (packaging): six 12 oz bottles
Brewery link: http://lagunitas.com/

About the Beer:
Lagunitas is a California brewery (with a tap room in Chicago) that has a fairly well known reputation for fun and flavorful beers. The name Censored supposedly comes from the fact that the feds rejected the original name (yes, they really do waste tax money doing this,) because it may or may not have had a marijuana reference. In any event, Censored is brewed to be easy drinking and malty, easy on the hops.

Color/appearance: amber to copper color, effervescent with a fluffy white head
Aroma: slightly citrus, baked bread undertones
Mouth feel: slick, with the after impression of licking a battery.
Flavor: toasted malt, nearly clean finish with a hint of rye, smoke? A hoppy note that almost gets lost.

Notes:
I’m not terribly crazy about this beer. The flavors lean very heavily into the malty side, which is good, but it almost comes off as burnt. There are clearly hops  present, but their flavor is lost under the weight of the malt. I’ll probably never say this again, but I think they were too cautious with the hops. The beer comes of as sweet and slightly acidic, but without the body to back it up.

Summary:
I’ve had other beers from Lagunitas that I like a lot better. I’ll try to review those soon. In the meantime, give this one a pass and try something else in their line up.

Rating : 2

Scale:
1 – avoid
2 – if it’s the only choice, I guess
3 – a decent beer. Drinkable.
4 – good beer – hard to turn down
5 – great beer - One of my favorites, pour me another.
