REVIEW: Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA

TL;DR summary : The Gold Standard IPA

Beer style: IPA
ABV 6.0
What I paid: $10.29
How it came (packaging): six 12 oz bottles.

About the Beer:
Dogfish Head Brewery out of Delaware is one of the more established craft brewers in the country. They became widely known to the masses for their television show Brewmasters, where they experimented with historical and exotic brewing processes. Even before the show, however, Dogfish Head, and their founder Sam Calagione have been known for innovative experiments in brewing and occasionally branching out into other non-beer specific projects.

The 60 Minute IPA is Dogfish Head’s flagship beer. It is continuously hopped (60 iterations) throughout a 60 minute boil, hence the name. They call it a powerful but balanced East Coast IPA.

Color/appearance: golden, straw colored. Effervescent with a light foamy head
Aroma: hops, grass, a bit of banana
Mouth feel: slightly slick
Flavor: toasty, with a balanced hop flavor. Hints of citrus and banana. Finishes slightly bitter

Notes:
This is what an IPA should be. Balanced, light bodied, a touch of malty goodness, with a big but not overpowering hoppy bitterness throughout. I know a lot of people who favor the 90 minute, and it is a good beer. But for me this is the benchmark all other IPAs should be measured against. If by some chance you have not had this beer, give it a try, even if you generally don’t like IPAs. Dogfish Head calls this a session beer for hardcore beer for hardcore enthusiasts, and they’re right. It’s hard to not want a second or a third.

Summary:  This is gold standard for IPAs, and a great go-to beer.

Rating : 4

Scale:
1 – avoid
2 – if it’s the only choice, I guess
3 – a decent beer. Drinkable.
4 – good beer – hard to turn down
5 – great beer - One of my favorites, pour me another.
