REVIEW: Bell’s Oberon

TL;DR summary: Summery goodness

Beer style: Wheat Ale
ABV 5.8 %
What I paid: 7.99 (in a pick six)
How it came (packaging): 12 oz.

About the Beer: Bell’s is one of Michigan’s most well known breweries. Bell’s opened in 1985 and has been growing and innovating ever since. They currently have  facilities in and around the Kalamazoo area, and have opened a sister brewery in Escanaba.
Oberon is Bell’s summer seasonal. It’s a wheat ale “with spicy hop character, and fruity aromas.” Sadly, Bell’s doesn’t currently distribute near me, but I was able to pick some up on a recent trip back to the Midwest.

Color/appearance: yellow, straw colored, slightly cloudy, foamy white head
Aroma: sweet fruit, slightly citrus
Mouth feel: light bodied, crisp, but not watery
Flavor: mellow, dry finish, bread, mild citrus, almost floral delicate hint of spice

Notes: smooth, easy to drink, summery. Light without being watery or dull. Could drink these all night. Sad it’s gone.

Summary: In the interest of full disclosure, this has been one of my favorite beers for a long time, and one I sorely missed moving to New England. That said, I love this beer. It’s great on a hot summer night. It goes well with your favorite summer foods. It’s not heavy, and the ABV is low enough that you can have a couple and not pass out. If you’re in Bell’s Distribution area and haven’t had a few this summer, I’m not sure what’s wrong with you.
